Mediators should be empathetic during the mediation process but not sympathetic. Being empathetic helps in building rapport between the mediation and the parties. However, showing sympathy towards any party may make the opposite party distrust the mediator. It may also give the wrong idea of "the mediator is on my side" to the party towards which mediator shows sympathy.
